Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate

The Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate (APP) brings together Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea and the United States of America to address the challenges of climate change, energy security and air pollution in a way that encourages economic development and reduces poverty.
The APP members are large, fast growing economies that represent around half the world’s emissions, energy use, GDP and population.
With its focus on the development, deployment and transfer of cleaner, more efficient technologies, the APP is unprecedented in the way business, government and researchers have agreed to work together. It is also the first time that industry has been afforded an opportunity to contribute as equal partners in global climate change discussions. The inaugural APP meeting in Sydney on 11-12 January 2006 involved APP Ministers and business representatives from the six founding members[1], who agreed on a Charter, Communique and Work Plan that outline a ground-breaking new model for international climate change and energy collaboration. At this meeting, eight international government and business taskforces were established (Cleaner Fossil Energy, Aluminium, Coal Mining, Steel, Cement, Buildings and Appliances, Power Generation and Transmission, and Renewable Energy and Distributed Generation.)
In January 2006 the Australian Government committed $100 million over five years for the partnership. In recognition of the significant commitment to the development of renewable resources, 25 per cent of the funds have been specifically earmarked for renewable energy. Currently Australia has allocated over $93 million to over 60 APP projects. These projects are drawn from across all eight Task Forces with a focus on cleaner fossil and renewable energy.
In all cases, Australian Government financial support is being provided in conjunction with support from other APP Partner countries and industry participants.Additionally, Australia is participating in, and providing in-kind support to, many other APP projects which will proceed with funding from other APP Partner countries and industry participants.
The attached document provides details of the initial round of projects receiving Australian Government funding support.
